The only difference between a long-term eSIM and a long-term physical SIM is the SIM type.
(eSIM: intangible / a physical SIM: tangible)
Other conditions are the same:
-Available plans
-Prices
-Coverages
etc.
However, depending on the identification document you have, you may still be required to pick up in person an envelope containing a QR code to install your eSIM at our Shinjuku office or airport counter.
Here are some pros and cons of the SIM cards and the eSIMs:
Feature | SIM Card | eSIM |
---|---|---|
Installation Process | May take a while until we approve your application and have it delivered | May take a while until we approve your application and have it delivered (In most cases, a physical pickup is mandatory for physical ID check purposes). |
Device Compatibility | Compatible with most unlocked phones with a SIM tray | Limited to eSIM-compatible devices only |
Switching to Another Device | Easy – simply remove and insert into a new device with no fees required | May require a fee and software process to transfer to a new device (depending on the situation) |
Risk of Damage During Install | Higher – risks bending or damaging if mishandled | Minimal – digital download removes physical handling |
Security Consideration | Susceptible to physical theft if a device is accessible | More secure; cannot be physically removed if the device is lost or stolen |
Risk of Misalignment or Loss | Higher – requires careful handling to avoid misalignment or loss | Low – embedded in a device, no risk of physical loss unless you accidentally delete it |
In summary, we would suggest you choose a physical SIM card if you often switch a SIM card to a new device from your old one.
If you would like to avoid the risk of losing a physical SIM card, we would suggest you choose an eSIM.
